| The Problem: Student support services
at a large educational institution wanted to develop an organizational
model to streamline maintenance and custodial functions within their units.
The institution had a centralized facility function that performed some
tasks. Other tasks were administered by individual units. LaSalle Group
was invited to analyze, evaluate, and recommend how student support services
could implement a single source provider.
The Solution: LaSalle Group created a facility
council composed of representatives from student support services and central
facilities. After analyzing how the work was performed and what it cost,
LaSalle Group determined that it would be more efficient and economical
to increase student support services’ facilities operations. To reduce
overhead costs charged by central facilities, we recommended that they
hire their own trades people. Anticipated savings for one unit alone would
be $300,000 per year. We also suggested that they contract their custodial
functions reducing these costs by 70% per year. Finally, we urged both
departments to establish a uniform accounting system that would allow transactions
to be entered only once.
